Hanging Rock State Park, NC

Looking for a location that won’t incur a mileage fee? Everything on this page is within the 25 mile limit!

Hanging Rock State Park is located in Stokes County. I’m going to highlight three areas that are fairly easy to access with beautiful views!

Hanging Rock Trail

This trail takes approximately 45 minutes to get to the top, so bear that in mind when booking your shoot. Sections of the trail are strenuous, not recommended for family portraits (but highly recommended for an engagement shoot). Trail length is 1.3 miles one way.

Hanging Rock Trail – making it to the top

If you have props or outfit changes you want on your shoot, please bring someone with you to help carry your items and shield you with a blanket while changing! Your significant other who is also going to be in the photos does not count as someone to carry your things – I can’t guard your items and take good pictures at the same time.

Indian Creek Trail – Hike to Hidden Falls

The woodsy section of this trail leading from the Visitor Center parking lot has beautiful lighting in the evening, and is a fairly easy trail. This leads to a small overlook, or you can choose to hike on towards Hidden Falls.

Indian Creek Trail – Hike to Hidden Falls

If you continue on to Hidden Falls, the hike is very short but strenuous – lots of steep rocks and steps to climb down to the falls. 0.4 miles one way.

Lower Cascades Trail

Taken from Hanging Rock State Park’s website: “Cascade Creek, which originates at the park lake, emerges from atop the naturally carved stone wall, noisily falling 35 feet into a large pool.” This trail is 0.4 miles one way, mostly flat through the woods until you get to the staircase descending to the pool. Be warned: it is a heck of a lot of stairs.

Another quick note on this location: it is very popular, and quite dark most of the day. I am always up for a challenge – but the moody feel of the photos I’ve posted is what you will get with this location!
